There is no official recommended lead time from the NSW Department of Education. Many families begin light, low-pressure practice a few months before the May test window in Year 4, focusing on reading stamina and untimed reasoning practice rather than intensive drilling.
Because NSW DET reports section results as performance bands rather than a single numerical score, it's worth preparing your child for the idea that a strong effort doesn't always translate to a top-band placement — competitive metropolitan schools typically admit from the top 10 to 20% of applicants.

How many OC places are available?

What is a competitive score?
