Free Year 7 Probability scale 0-1 Practice | Skillo

Year 7 students facing their third NAPLAN need to be confident with probability scale 0-1. Recognise that probabilities lie on numerical scales of 0-1 or 0%-100% and use estimation to assign probabilities. Skillo has targeted practice questions for this exact skill, mapped to the Australian Curriculum v9.0, free and ready to go.

What is tested: Probability scale 0-1

  • Recognise that probabilities lie on numerical scales of 0-1 or 0%-100% and use estimation to assign probabilities.
  • Questions may include word problems set in real Australian contexts
  • Both calculator and non-calculator question types are covered

Sample questions

Question 1Easy

Two birdwatching groups recorded the number of native birds spotted each day for five days. Group 1: 4, 6, 6, 8, 6 Group 2: 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 Which statement correctly describes the distribution of Group 2 compared to Group 1?

A) Group 2 is more spread out and has a mode of 7
B) Group 2 is more spread out and has no mode
C) Group 1 is more spread out and has a mode of 6
D) Both groups have the same spread

Answer: Group 1's range is 8 − 4 = 4. Group 2's range is 11 − 3 = 8, so Group 2 is more spread out. In Group 2, every value is different, so there is no mode. Group 1's mode is 6 (appears three times). Option A incorrectly states Group 2 has a mode of 7. Option C incorrectly claims Group 1 is more spread out. Option D is wrong because the ranges differ.

Question 2Medium

A bag contains 5 red marbles, 4 blue marbles, and 3 green marbles. Mia picks one marble at random without looking. What is the probability that she picks a marble that is NOT red, expressed as a fraction in simplest form?

A) 5/12
B) 7/12
C) 7/10
D) 3/7

Answer: Total marbles = 12. Not-red marbles = 4 + 3 = 7. Probability = 7/12, which is already in simplest form.

Question 3Hard

In a Year 7 science experiment, students measured the growth of seedlings (in cm) over 2 weeks: 4.2, 5.8, 3.9, 6.1, 4.7, 5.3, 4.0. What is the median growth measurement?

A) 4.7 cm
B) 5.3 cm
C) 4.9 cm
D) 4.2 cm

Answer: Ordered values: 3.9, 4.0, 4.2, 4.7, 5.3, 5.8, 6.1. The median (middle value of 7) is the 4th value = 4.7 cm.
