Sample questions

Question 1Easy

Priya forgot to ___ her library book before returning it to the school library.

A) re-new
B) renew
C) rennew
D) reenew

Answer: When adding the prefix 're-' to a base word, the base word spelling does not change and no hyphen is needed for common words. 'Renew' is correct because 're-' is simply added to 'new' without alteration. 'Re-new' incorrectly uses a hyphen, 'rennew' doubles the 'n' at the morpheme boundary, and 'reenew' adds an unnecessary extra 'e'.

Question 2Medium

Priya had always believed that __________ was power. She spent every afternoon at the library, reading about science, history, and art, until she felt she could discuss almost any topic confidently. Which of the following is the correct spelling of the missing word?

A) knowledge
B) knoledge
C) knowlege
D) knolwedge

Answer: The correct spelling is 'knowledge'. The silent 'k' at the start and the '-ledge' ending are the most common sources of error. Options B, C, and D each omit or rearrange letters incorrectly.

Question 3Hard

The audience said the performance was absolutely ___ and gave the cast a standing ovation. Which spelling is correct?

A) marvelous
B) marvellus
C) marvellous
D) marvelious

Answer: 'Marvellous' is the correct Australian and British spelling. It has double 'l' and ends in '-ous': mar-vel-lous. Option A ('marvelous') is the American English spelling with only one 'l' — not used in Australian English. Option B ('marvellus') changes '-ous' to '-us'. Option D ('marvelious') adds an 'i' before '-ous'.
