Sample questions

Question 1Easy

Tom scored 8.9 points in a school maths competition. Which score is between 8.9 and 9.0?

A) 8.19
B) 8.09
C) 9.01
D) 8.95

Answer: 8.95 is greater than 8.9 and less than 9.0, so it sits between the two values. 8.19 and 8.09 are both less than 8.9, and 9.01 is greater than 9.0.

Question 2Medium

Zac is packing boxes of apples. Each box holds exactly 24 apples. He has 580 apples to pack. How many full boxes can he pack, and how many apples are left over?

A) 24 boxes, 4 left over
B) 25 boxes, 4 left over
C) 23 boxes, 20 left over
D) 24 boxes, 12 left over

Answer: Option A is correct because 580 ÷ 24 = 24 remainder 4, meaning Zac fills 24 full boxes with 4 apples left over. Option B is incorrect because 25 full boxes would require 600 apples, which is more than Zac has.

Question 3Hard

A robot's speed (m/s) was recorded over 5 trials: 4, 6, 5, 7, 3. What is the MEAN speed?

A) 4.5 m/s
B) 5 m/s
C) 6 m/s
D) 7 m/s

Answer: Mean = sum ÷ count = (4 + 6 + 5 + 7 + 3) ÷ 5 = 25 ÷ 5 = 5 m/s. Option A (4.5) uses only 4 values or divides by 6 instead of 5. Option C (6) is the value that appears but is not the mean. Option D (7) is the maximum.
