Sample questions

Question 1Easy

Tom finished his lunch. ___, he went back to play football with his friends.

A) However
B) Although
C) Then
D) Because

Answer: When one event follows another in time, a time connective such as 'Then' is used to show the sequence. 'Then' correctly signals that going back to play happened after lunch was finished. 'However' suggests contrast, 'Although' introduces a condition, and 'Because' introduces a reason — none of these fit a simple time sequence.

Question 2Medium

Read the paragraph below. Choose the best word to start the second sentence. The class worked hard on their mural all morning. ___, the artwork was finished by lunchtime.

A) Similarly
B) Although
C) As a result
D) In contrast

Answer: The second sentence describes the outcome of working hard all morning, so a cause-and-effect connective is needed. 'As a result' correctly signals that finishing the artwork was the outcome of their hard work. 'Similarly' adds a comparison, 'Although' introduces a condition or contrast, and 'In contrast' signals an opposing idea.

Question 3Hard

Priya finished her warm-up laps. ___, she joined the rest of the team.

A) However
B) Although
C) Then
D) Despite

Answer: The word 'Then' shows a time sequence, connecting one action that follows another. Priya finishing her laps and then joining the team is a sequence of events, so 'Then' creates the correct logical relationship. 'However' and 'Although' signal contrast, and 'Despite' signals opposition, none of which fit here.
