Sample questions
Question 1 — Easy
Four AFL matches were played on the weekend. The crowds were 3,418, 2,756, 4,204 and 3,930. Round each crowd to the nearest thousand, then add them together. Which is the best estimate of the total crowd?
Answer: Round each crowd to the nearest thousand: 3,418 ≈ 3,000, 2,756 ≈ 3,000, 4,204 ≈ 4,000, 3,930 ≈ 4,000. Adding these gives 3,000 + 3,000 + 4,000 + 4,000 = 14,000, which is the best estimate of the total crowd.
Question 2 — Medium
Zac is tracking the number of visitors to four Australian national parks. The parks received 12,450, 18,730, 15,210, and 11,980 visitors. Which number of visitors is the smallest?
Answer: 11,980 is the smallest number because it has the fewest ten-thousands and thousands when compared to the others. 12,450 and 15,210 are both larger than 11,980, and 18,730 is the largest of all four numbers.
Question 3 — Hard
The crowd at a football match was 23,648 people. Which number is largest?
Answer: 23,864 is the largest because its hundreds digit is 8, which is greater than the hundreds digits in the other numbers. Comparing digit by digit from left to right, 23,864 is greater than 23,684, 23,648 and 23,486.
