Sample questions

Question 1Easy

The diver saw a massive whale shark near the reef. Which word is the best SYNONYM for 'massive'?

A) microscopic
B) enormous
C) moderate
D) gentle

Answer: A synonym is a word with the same or very similar meaning. 'Enormous' means very large — it is the best synonym for 'massive'. Option A ('microscopic') means extremely small — the opposite. Option C ('moderate') means medium-sized — not large enough. Option D ('gentle') describes manner or behaviour, not size.

Question 2Medium

Which sentence uses an apostrophe correctly?

A) The canteen's menu changes every Monday.
B) The canteen's are closed on public holidays.
C) The student's were lining up for lunch.
D) Its the students favourite time of day.

Answer: Option A correctly uses a possessive apostrophe: 'the canteen's menu' means the menu belonging to the canteen. Option B incorrectly adds an apostrophe to form a plural — 'canteens' (more than one canteen) does not need an apostrophe. Option C incorrectly adds an apostrophe to 'students' when it is used as a plural subject, not a possessive. Option D needs 'It's' (a contraction of 'It is') instead of 'Its'.

Question 3Hard

Which sentence uses the POSSESSIVE APOSTROPHE correctly for the planet Saturn?

A) Saturns' rings are made of ice and rock.
B) Saturns rings are made of ice and rock.
C) Saturn ring's are made of ice and rock.
D) Saturn's rings are made of ice and rock.

Answer: Option D is correct — 'Saturn's' correctly shows that the rings BELONG TO Saturn. For singular nouns (Saturn is one planet), add apostrophe + s: Saturn's. Option A ('Saturns'') places the apostrophe after the 's' — correct for plural possessives, but 'Saturn' is singular. Option B has no apostrophe.
