Sample questions

Question 1Easy

Choose the sentence that correctly uses an adverb. Priya performed at the school talent quest in Hobart.

A) Priya sung beautiful at the talent quest.
B) Priya sang beautifuly at the talent quest.
C) Priya sang beautifully at the talent quest.
D) Priya sang beautiful at the talent quest.

Answer: Option C is correct — Adverbs modify verbs and are usually formed by adding '-ly' to an adjective. 'Beautifully' is the correct adverb form of 'beautiful'. 'Beautiful' is an adjective and cannot modify the verb 'sang', and 'beautifuly' is a misspelling.

Question 2Medium

Read the sentence and identify the underlined word's grammatical role. 'The excited children ran __quickly__ towards the Sydney Harbour fireworks.' What is the grammatical role of the word 'quickly'?

A) Adjective
B) Noun
C) Adverb
D) Verb

Answer: 'Quickly' describes how the children ran, modifying the verb 'ran'. A word that modifies a verb is called an adverb.

Question 3Hard

Which sentence uses the correct form of the adjective to compare more than two things? The students were ranking three Australian animals by size.

A) The red kangaroo is more larger than the wallaby or the quokka.
B) The red kangaroo is the most largest of the three animals.
C) The red kangaroo is the largest of the three animals.
D) The red kangaroo is the larger of the three animals.

Answer: Option C is correct — When comparing more than two things, the superlative form 'largest' is used. Options A and B incorrectly double the superlative, and option D uses the comparative form 'larger', which is only for comparing two things.
