Answer: A singular subject ('the dog') needs a singular verb. 'Plays' is the correct singular present tense form. 'Play' is the plural form used with subjects like 'they' or 'the dogs'. 'Playing' is a participle and cannot stand alone as the main verb here. 'Played' is past tense, which does not match 'every day'.
Question 2 — Medium
Zac ___ his vegetables at dinner.
Answer: The singular subject 'Zac' requires a singular present tense verb. 'Eats' is the correct singular form. 'Eat' is the plural form used with subjects like 'they'. 'Eating' is a participle and cannot be the main verb on its own. 'Are eating' uses a plural helping verb that does not agree with the singular subject 'Zac'.
Question 3 — Hard
Choose the correct word to complete the sentence. Anika ___ the winning goal at sport.
Answer: The sentence describes a completed action (scoring a winning goal at a sporting event), so the past tense 'scored' is correct. The singular subject 'Anika' must also agree with its verb. 'Score' and 'scores' are present tense forms that do not match the past event. 'Scoring' is a participle and cannot stand alone as the main verb.
