Sample questions

Question 1Easy

Tom is placing 5 gumnuts in each group. He has made groups with 5, 10, 15, and 20 gumnuts. How many gumnuts will be in the next group if he keeps the same pattern?

A) 30
B) 22
C) 21
D) 25

Answer: Tom is skip counting by 5s. Each group has 5 more than the last. 20 + 5 = 25, so the next group has 25 gumnuts. 30 skips too far ahead, and 21 and 22 are not part of the counting by 5s pattern.

Question 2Medium

Mia is counting by 5s. She says: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, ___. What number comes next in the pattern?

A) 28
B) 26
C) 35
D) 30

Answer: When counting by 5s, each number is 5 more than the one before it. 25 + 5 = 30, so the next number is 30. 28 and 26 are not part of the skip counting by 5s pattern, and 35 skips over 30.

Question 3Hard

Kofi is saving 10 cents every day. After some days he has: 10, 20, 30, ___, 50 cents. What is the missing number in the pattern?

A) 40
B) 45
C) 35
D) 38

Answer: Kofi is skip counting by 10s, so each amount is 10 more than the one before it. 30 + 10 = 40, so 40 cents is the missing number. 35 and 38 are not multiples of 10, and 45 is 5 more than 40.
