Sample questions

Question 1Easy

Anika's football training starts when the minute hand points to 12 and the hour hand points to 4. What time does training start?

A) 3 o'clock
B) 4 o'clock
C) half past 4
D) quarter past 4

Answer: When the minute hand points to 12 and the hour hand points to 4, the time is 4 o'clock. The minute hand at 12 always means it is exactly on the hour. Options A, C and D are wrong because the hour hand is clearly pointing to 4, not 3, and the minute hand is not pointing to 6 or 3.

Question 2Medium

Tom is feeding the kangaroos at a wildlife park. A sign says feeding time is at half past 11. The clock on the wall shows the hour hand between 11 and 12, and the minute hand pointing to 6. Is it feeding time yet?

A) No — the clock shows quarter past 11
B) Yes — the clock shows quarter to 12
C) No — the clock shows 11 oclock
D) Yes — the clock shows half past 11

Answer: When the minute hand points to 6, it shows 30 minutes past the hour, which is half past. The hour hand is between 11 and 12, so the time is half past 11 — it is feeding time. Option A is wrong because the minute hand on 6 means half past, not quarter past. Option C is wrong because the hour hand is not on 11 exactly. Option D is wrong because quarter to 12 would have the minute hand on 9.

Question 3Hard

Priya's swimming lesson starts when the hour hand points to 4 and the minute hand points to 6. What time does her lesson start?

A) Half past 4
B) Quarter past 4
C) 4 oclock
D) Quarter to 4

Answer: When the minute hand points to 6, it has gone halfway around the clock, which means half past the hour. The hour hand points to 4, so the time is half past 4. Quarter past means the minute hand is on the 3, and quarter to means the minute hand is on the 9.
