Sample questions

Question 1Easy

Priya collected 34 cans for the school food drive. Luca collected 28 cans. How many cans did they collect altogether?

A) 52
B) 62
C) 56
D) 60

Answer: 34 + 28 = 62, so they collected 62 cans altogether. Option A (52) comes from adding the tens but subtracting instead of adding the ones. Option C (56) results from incorrectly adding 34 + 22. Option D (60) comes from rounding both numbers before adding.

Question 2Medium

There were 75 spectators watching a junior AFL match. During half-time, 38 spectators left. How many spectators were remaining after half-time?

A) 47
B) 43
C) 37
D) 33

Answer: 75 − 38 = 37, so 37 spectators were remaining. Option A (47) results from subtracting only the tens digit (75 − 30 = 45) and then adding 2 instead of subtracting 8. Option B (43) comes from subtracting incorrectly without regrouping, treating 5 − 8 as 2 and getting 43. Option D (33) comes from subtracting 42 instead of 38.

Question 3Hard

Priya has 56 shells in her collection. She finds 27 more shells at the beach. How many shells does she have altogether?

A) 73
B) 83
C) 29
D) 79

Answer: 56 + 27 = 83, so Priya has 83 shells altogether. Option A (73) comes from adding incorrectly without carrying the tens. Option C (29) comes from subtracting instead of adding. Option D (79) comes from a place value error when carrying.
