Sample questions

Question 1Easy

Kofi is packing mango slices into bags at a market stall. Each bag holds 8 mango slices. He has 5 full trays with 9 slices on each tray. How many complete bags can Kofi fill?

A) 6
B) 5
C) 45
D) 4

Answer: First, find the total number of mango slices: 5 × 9 = 45. Then divide by 8 to find how many complete bags: 45 ÷ 8 = 5 remainder 5. So Kofi can fill 5 complete bags with 5 slices left over. Wait — 5 complete bags is option B. Re-checking: 45 ÷ 8 = 5.625, so 5 complete bags. The correct answer is B. Reassigning: correct answer is B = 5.

Question 2Medium

Priya is setting up tables for a school lunch. She has 6 tables and wants to place 7 chairs at each table. She already has 18 chairs. How many more chairs does she need?

A) 42
B) 24
C) 28
D) 36

Answer: First, find the total chairs needed: 6 groups of 7 gives a product of 42. Priya already has 18 chairs, so 42 − 18 = 24 more chairs are needed. Option A is just the product 42 without subtracting the 18 she already has. Option C adds 18 and 7 incorrectly. Option D multiplies 6 × 6 instead of 6 × 7.

Question 3Hard

Anika has 3 shelves of books. Each shelf holds 9 books. How many books are there altogether?

A) 21
B) 12
C) 30
D) 27

Answer: 3 × 9 = 27. Multiplying the number of shelves by the books per shelf gives 27 books in total.
