Sample questions

Question 1Easy

The circus tent has rows of seats arranged in groups of 10. The pattern is: 10, 20, 30, 40, ___. What comes NEXT?

A) 50
B) 45
C) 100
D) 41

Answer: The pattern counts UP by 10 each time (skip counting by tens). 40 + 10 = 50. Option B (45) adds 5 instead of 10. Option C (100) is far too many steps ahead. Option D (41) adds only 1.

Question 2Medium

A muffin tin has 3 rows with 4 muffins in each row. How many muffins are there altogether?

A) 7
B) 8
C) 12
D) 16

Answer: 3 rows × 4 muffins = 12 muffins. Count: 4 + 4 + 4 = 12. This is an array — 3 groups of 4. Option A (7) adds 3 + 4 = 7 instead of multiplying. Option B (8) uses 2 × 4. Option D (16) uses 4 × 4.

Question 3Hard

Sofia buys a cup of lemonade for $1.75. She pays with a $2 coin. How much change does she receive?

A) 15 cents
B) 25 cents
C) 35 cents
D) 50 cents

Answer: $2.00 − $1.75 = $0.25 = 25 cents. Count up: $1.75 → $2.00 = 25 cents. Option A (15 cents) is too small. Option C (35 cents) would mean the price was $1.65. Option D (50 cents) would mean the price was $1.50.
