How to prepare
Don't conflate the three: NAPLAN prep is about literacy/numeracy fundamentals for every student in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9; Selective/OC prep is about competing for a limited number of placement spots; Scholarship prep is school-specific and worth checking directly with the target school.
If your child is doing more than one — for example NAPLAN this year and a Selective test next year — the reading and numeracy fundamentals from NAPLAN practice carry over directly.

When is NAPLAN?
NAPLAN runs in March each year across all Australian schools, delivered online over a two-week window set by ACARA.
Is NAPLAN compulsory?
Yes for enrolled students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, though parents may apply to withdraw their child through the school.
How is NAPLAN scored?
Since 2023, results are reported on a proficiency scale with four levels: Exceeding, Strong, Developing, and Needs Additional Support.
What's the difference between NAPLAN, Selective, and Scholarship tests?
NAPLAN is compulsory, run by ACARA every March for all Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students in Australian schools — it doesn't affect school placement. Selective and OC tests (NSW, VIC, QLD, WA) are optional entry exams for academically selective government schools. Scholarship tests (ACER, Edutest, AAS) are run for or by independent schools to award scholarships or entry places. All three test different things, at different times, for different purposes.
